A batucada with many breaks - at times we've had 17 breaks in this piece! "Ano Novo" = "New Year"; named for our gigs with Jesse Cook, New Year's Eve at the NAC, Ottawa. So we learned quite a few of these from Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad. Others are very traditional, stretching way back - e.g. at least to the 'Brasileiro" album by Sergio Mendes & Carlinhos Brown. And some breaks are our own invention.
The entradas, breaks and finishes are described individually with audio and/or video where possible, but the longer audio tracks and videos near the end also have a list of which breaks happen when.
Breaks currently not in the repertoire are at the foot of the page.
Breaks are signalled by hand, then usually either called in with a reqenique chamada, or by the apito.
Taught to us by Maninho - of course!
Listen to Maninho's entrada (MP3 less than 1MB)
Just a quick call from the repenique, then the tamborim entrada, then every does the samba.
Listen to the quick entrada (MP3 300KB) Note: We've changed the arrangement since this recording: the agogos and shakers don't come in until after the tamborim entrada.
You can hear the original Fanfarra on the Carlinos Brown and Serghio Mendes album 'Brasileiro'.
Each section is call-and-response, usually repeated twice. Here are phrases that Rick Lazar uses for some of the sections:
Listen to Fanfarra (MP3 1MB) Note: We've changed the arrangement since this recording: the agogos and shakers don't come in until after the tamborim entrada.
Signal (hold up 3 fingers, 3 blasts on apito):
Listen to Ano Novo Break #3 (MP3 500KB)
Signal (hold up 4 fingers, 4 blasts on apito):
Listen to Ano Novo Break #4 (MP# 300KB) Not perfect: should be 4 apito blasts.
Signal (hold up 5 fingers, long blasts on apito):
Listen to Ano Novo Break #5 (MP# 300KB)
From Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad, we got the convention that you add five to the number of fingers the mestre holds up, if he/she holds them in front of his/her face.
So, for break #6, the signal is one finger in front of the face (5+1=6). This became known as the 'unibrow' break.
Signal: Four apito blasts with one finger on forehead:
Ano Novo - Unibrow break - Vankleek Hill May 2010 (3.2MB wmv):
Signal (point to sky), long blast on apito:
Listen to the Sky break (MP3, 300KB).
Signal: Point to eye (or both eyes):
Listen to the Eye break in Ano Novo (MP3 700KB) Not perfect: shakers & agogos should not come in until after the tamborim entrada.
Ano Novo - Eye break - Vankleek Hill May 2010 (5MB wmv):
Signal: Make a big 'wave' sign, 4 apito whistles.
Listen to The Wave from Ano Novo (MP3 500KB) Not perfect (we've changed it since this recording): everyone should finish on the second 'spot', then just surdos & tamborims play - like a regular tamborim entrada.
Signal (letter 'L'):
Signal (only to tamborims): 'Talking hand', 'number 1'.
Listen to tamborim conversation #1 (MP3 400K) Not perfect: shakers finish too soon.
Signal (only to tamborims): 'Talking hand', 'number 2'.
Listen to tamborim conversation #2 (MP3 650KB)
Remember conversation #2 by the two distinct hits that start it off and get repeated frequently.
Tamborim conversation #2 was inspired by this Mocidade break: 'Track 6' tamborim conversation mp3
This break is named after the street in Rio by the sambadromo, where the carnaval competition takes place.
The break is taken from the Enredo Liberdade, Liberdade, by Imperatriz Leopoldinense.
Signal: With both hands, make 'crowd' signal with wiggling fingers.
Ano Novo - Sapucai - Vankleek Hill May 2010 (2.7MB wmv):
Note: Shakers are a bit shakey on the timing!
This break was put together for Mozart's 250th birthday. It's based on parts of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
Signal: Mestre 'plays the violin'
Ano Novo - Mozart 250 - Vankleek Hill May 2010 (6.7MB wmv):
A 12/8 pattern with a very African feel.
Signal: 'Boy Scout' salute twice, 4 blasts on apito.
'My Dog Spot' finish, then everyone starts the break on the next bar.
Here's the patterns for all the main instruments, twice through:

Signal: Fist in the air.
